My name is Lisa de Haas and I have been creating stained glass pieces since 2015. I'm located in Springbank Alberta Canada (just west of Calgary) and am so fortunate to follow my passion for glass in such a beautiful environment. The 3 Dog Glass name, came from my 3 dogs who are truly my shadows. When I'm working on my glass, they can be found relaxing in my workshop.
Very few people are aware of the process that leads to a finished piece of stained glass. Stained glass is not stained or painted. Each piece of glass is cut from a sheet of the desired colour and texture. Using a glass cutter, grinders, and ring saws, these pieces of glass are cut and put together much like a puzzle, in that each piece must fit precisely into the pattern.
Once the glass is cut, it is cleaned to remove any dust or markings. Each piece of the picture is then "wrapped" or outlined with copper foil and flux is applied. These steps are necessary in order to get the solder to adhere to the glass and hold the piece together.
Solder, consisting of tin and lead, is heated with a soldering iron and moves much like flowing lava. The solder line should be smooth and slightly rounded and it takes quite a bit of experience to achieve that outcome.
The glass can now be cleaned once again, and a patina can be applied to the solder if that look is desired. The piece is then framed and ready to be placed in a sunny window.
Please check out my gallery to see some of my work. I am also happy to do commissions if there is a certain stained glass piece you are searching for.
